Pixeled Glass

Project Summary

Pixeled Glass is an interactive projection designed to be exhibited in public spaces. Beginning as a simple camera feed creating a virtual mirror on a screen, motion activates a magical tiled glass effect.

The project was created using TouchDesigner, using only TOPs and CHOPs.

My Contribution

This was a solo project, so every part of the TouchDesigner was created by me. With that said, I did have a few rounds of feedback from a professor, which helped guide some of my design decisions.

Accomplishments

Overall, I think I created a very successful visual effect, and I enjoy the interactivity of the motion activation. I could definitely see this on display in a public space, and I think it looks best outdoors where you get the natural colors of the sky and greenery.

Shortcomings

Although not in my scope for this project, I do think it would be a much better experience with an auditory element. It also doesn't look as visually interesting in environments that are lacking in color. Overall, I think this is an idea I would like to expand upon in the future.

What I Learned

I learned a lot about using TouchDesigner, such as using feedback loops, measuring movement in an image, and various operations with CHOPs and TOPs. Overall, this was a great introduction to the software and I now feel quite comfortable with creating 2D effects.

Future Goals

In the future, I would like to expand upon this project and implement audio, and hopefully actually display it in a public place. I would like to put it somewhere unexpected, and catch people off guard when they realize it's not just a simple camera feed, and there is actually a motion-activated effect.
